Blog Entry #1: My Media Use Over 24 Hours
7:00 - Wake up and check for any important text messages or work emails/Slacks. To be honest, I could go without as I hardly ever have anything that needs an immediate response.
7:30 - Shower and put on some music through Spotify. Today I listened to a combination of R&B and soft indie.
8:00 - Open up TikTok while prepping breakfast to have some background noise and see if there is anything of interest. I suppose with the upcoming ban it'll now be YouTube Shorts as I think Instagram Reels' algorithm often misses the mark.
8:30 - Open up Snapchat to read news stories on their subscriptions page--today I read the Washington Post. I'll also catch up on any text messages from friends.
9:00 to 16:00 - I'm now at work and the only media I use are Spotify to listen to a podcast--currently John Vervake's Awakening from the Meaning Crisis is my favorite--and Slack or text messages. I didn't have any emails to send today.
16:30 - I go to the gym and listen to a combination of rap, metal, and dubstep on Spotify. I use my AppleWatch to track my heart rate and calories burned.
19:00 - I'm now home and eating dinner. I watched The Good Place on Netflix tonight.
20:00 - I shower again, listening to Americana on Spotify. Charles Wesley Godwin is one of my favorite artists.
20:30 - I check all my social media (Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X, and Threads) and respond to any remaining text or WhatsApp messages.
21:30 - I play my daily dose of Impulse games.
22:00 - I put away my phone and turn on Monk, my favorite bedtime show that I've rewatched many times.
~ Nine Hours Later ~
Uninterestingly, my day proceeds to be relatively the same, with a slight few changes in the timing of things. On days that I have more free time, I'll read a book. I'm currently reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
One thing of note: I frequently check my AppleWatch as I get notifications sent to it. However, I rarely use it to respond.
What I Discovered: I discovered that I spend a lot of time using technology. I've been trying to spend more time reading actual books, and tracking this information is the push I needed. I think I'll replace my bedtime show with reading, and watch my bedtime show only on very lazy days. In terms of what I think are the most credible media sources, it's probably the news stories on Snapchat. I prefer those over going to the website, as it's easy to swipe in and out of them whenever I have the inkling to do so. They're the most credible for me, as reading stories from the Washington Post, Vox, the Wall Street Journal, or ESPN provide a range of perspectives and opinions. I also really like watching WeRateDogs on TikTok (I linked their YouTube), as it's positive news and I don't see why they would spread misinformation surrounding the adorable dogs.
